In this fast-paced world, we frequently find ourselves working nonstop to meet deadlines, keep up with others, and accomplish numerous tasks while also attempting to maintain interpersonal relationships. In this long to-do list, our own needs and self-care are often at the bottom, if not entirely absent. But skipping out on self-care can result in stress, burnout, and a host of other health problems.

However, we continue to disregard our needs. There could be a variety of reasons for this, including waiting for that goal to be met, feeling guilty for putting yourself first, fear of being labelled selfish, and viewing self-care as a time waste or something that should be expensive or aesthetically pleasing. I mean, there is no denying the aesthetic aspect, is there? After all, we see that everywhere on social media, which has ultimately led to the association of facial masks and pricey cafes with self-care. Well, to be honest, it’s overwhelming; even self-care sounds like hard work, something for which you should go out of the way. The good news is that self-care does not have to be aesthetically pleasing or expensive.

So, what exactly is self-care, and if it does not have to be aesthetically pleasing or expansive, how can we practise it?

The ability to take care of oneself through awareness, self-control, and self-reliance in order to achieve, maintain, or promote optimal health and well-being is what is meant to be understood as self-care, according to Martínez, Connelly, et al.'s study "Self-care: A content analysis," published in 2021. It is an active decision-making process that allows individuals to effectively participate in their care.

Here is a list of various activities or strategies that can help you start your self-care journey.

  • Develop a regular sleep pattern

  • Spending time with loved ones

  • Practice gratitude

  • Exercise regularly

  • Relax and recharge

  • Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated

  • Listening to music

  • Watch a movie

  • Painting and Artwork

  • Read a book

It is important to keep in mind that not every strategy listed above will be effective for you because everyone is unique. We must all keep searching until we discover something that we enjoy and find to be calming. Self-care is a journey that is worthwhile to embark on, despite the numerous trials and errors.

Setting aside time for self-care is not selfish; rather, it is a necessary necessity that helps maintain a balanced, physically, and mentally healthy life. So get started on your journey today.
