Expressing Gratitude

Updated: May 4

What is Gratitude?

The American Psychological Association defines Gratitude as a sense of thankfulness and happiness in response to receiving a gift, either a tangible benefit (e.g., a present, or favour) given by someone or a fortunate happenstance (e.g., a beautiful day).

But why is it important?

Gratitude isn’t just about being thankful it is a deeper feeling of appreciation which one feels. It helps boost happiness and life satisfaction (Emmons & McCullough, 2003), reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, increase the overall mental health of individuals Jans-Beken et al.,2020, foster stronger relationships (Passmore & Oades.2016). Studies also suggest gratitude is linked to better sleep and a stronger immune system.

How to practice gratitude in daily life

Gratitude can be practised in various ways. You can, before going to bed reflect on how your day was, what things were you grateful for today? Did you and your friend laugh about something random, endlessly? Was the weather beautiful today? Did you ace your class today? Did you reach your class on time? Some things like that.

Always say thanks to those who help you out. Saying thank you with genuine eye contact can take you far. It will help you not only spread positivity but also speak to your character.

Spread gratefulness with your loved ones as well. Say things like, “Wasn’t today just perfect?”, “Thank you for always supporting me” or “This food is so delicious!

How Gratitude can enable individuals to achieve Financial Goals

Practising gratitude can be beneficial in achieving financial goals in several ways. Firstly, it helps in shifting the focus from scarcity to abundance, making it easier to manage money wisely and avoid unnecessary spending. Secondly, appreciating the current financial situation, brings contentment, which results in reducing impulse buys and making smarter financial decisions. Thirdly, gratitude motivates individuals to set and pursue ambitious yet achievable financial goals by recognizing past successes. It also boosts creativity in finding ways to save and reach those goals. Being grateful attracts new opportunities for income and better financial options. By appreciating money's role in security and experiences, gratitude reduces financial stress and strengthens commitment to long-term goals. Overall, gratitude keeps one motivated and resilient, aiding in staying on track even when faced with challenges.

How Gratitude Can Open the Door to More Relationships

Gratitude radiates positivity, drawing people closer with uplifting energy. By focusing on the good, it enhances appeal and approachability, making interactions more pleasant. When thanking the people you care about, relationships become stronger and closer. This often leads to kindness in return, maintaining positivity. Moreover, gratitude cultivates empathy and compassion, heightening understanding and supportiveness in relationships. Being grateful makes it easier to talk without getting defensive and encourages honest conversations. This creates a safe space for giving and receiving helpful feedback and building stronger connections. Gratitude also helps find friends who think alike and see the good in life.

How to Use Gratitude to Improve Your Physical Health

Gratitude can improve physical health in many ways. Firstly, it reduces stress and boosts the immune system, leading to better sleep and lower blood pressure. When focusing on positive things before bed, sleep improves, allowing the body to repair itself. Gratitude can also help manage pain by shifting focus away from discomfort. It encourages healthier habits like regular exercise and eating well and strengthens relationships, beneficial for emotional health and longevity.

To improve physical health with gratitude, try these simple tips. Before bed, reflect on what the body can do and feel thankful for it. In a gratitude journal, write down things appreciated about the body, even when not feeling the best. When exercising, focus on being grateful for the body's strength and flexibility. Also, thank healthcare workers for helping us stay healthy and for the medical care received. By being grateful, one might feel less stressed, sleep better, and desire better self-care, leading to a healthier and happier life. Remember, gratitude isn't a replacement for medical help. If you are worried about your health, talk to a doctor.

How to Use Gratitude to Foster a Sense of Gratitude for the Opportunities for Growth in Life

Cultivate gratitude for life's growth opportunities by seeing challenges as chances to learn and grow. Reflect on past hurdles, appreciate the lessons learned, and find positives in tough times. Keep a gratitude journal focused on growth, noting challenges faced and personal milestones reached. Celebrate every small victory, thanking mentors who've helped along the way. Be grateful for the desire to improve and embrace a growth mindset.

Through these practices, challenges become pathways to personal growth, fostering gratitude for life's continuous journey of self-improvement.
