Embracing Change: Painting the Journey of Change

Updated: May 4

“A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it.” — Nikki Giovanni

The journey of our lives cannot be captured on a single canvas; rather, it is a collection of many. Every time we experience a significant life transition or face a major change, there is a blank canvas just waiting to be painted with colours. This shift frequently causes us to feel extremely uneasy and afraid. It is okay to feel this way because we are leaving behind something familiar and embarking on a completely new and uncertain journey. However, this path also provides an abundance of opportunities. Similar to how a blank canvas evokes uncertainty and the desire to know what to paint and with what colours, life transitions can be both thrilling and frightening, full of unknowns, but also full of boundless possibilities and fresh insights.

Life transitions are an integral part of the human experience. Any modification or adjustment that has a major effect on your life is referred to as a life transition. Everybody goes through changes in their lives, both major and minor, planned and unforeseen. Life transitions, such as moving to a new city, moving from school to college, getting married, having a baby, going through a divorce, changing careers, retiring from employment, or dealing with a crippling health condition, can be a source of personal growth and development. So, whether the transition is exciting or distressing, embrace it, because the paintings created on canvas are a journey full of ups and downs, new discoveries, and memories. It demonstrates our development, self-discovery, and strength.

But the question is, how do we embrace this change? Are there any strategies for effectively managing these life transitions?

Well, the answer is “YES”. Each person will have a unique approach that suits them best. But as Brammer noted in his 1992 study on coping with life transitions, the main dynamic is the process of letting go of the previous value, relationship, or belief and embracing a new one.

Here are some strategies that the individual can experiment with to see which one works best for them.

  • Build a support system

  • Invest in healthy lifestyle that includes eating healthy, exercising, and getting quality sleep

  • Recognise that change is normal, even healthy, and sometimes unavoidable

  • Acknowledge your feelings

  • Looking at the transition as an opportunity

  • Getting counselling or therapy

  • Practising mindfulness

The way we choose to fill the blank canvas of a life transition can significantly affect our journey. Each stroke of resilience, every colour of emotion, and the overall picture of our experiences shape who we are. While the transition may appear overwhelming at first, with the right strategies and mindset, it can become an opportunity for profound growth and self-discovery.

The masterpiece that results from these experiences demonstrates our strength, adaptability, and the beauty of human life in all its complexities.
