Embracing My Mental Health Journey

Updated: May 4

Life's twists and turns have a way of challenging us in unexpected ways. As a psychologist, sportsperson, winner of the Ms. Talentia title, multitasker, and volunteer at various NGOs, my journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, victories and setbacks, but above all, a journey of self-discovery and resilience.

Like many, I've faced my share of struggles—parental pressure, a lack of social support, self-doubt, negative emotions, overthinking, under-confidence, and losses that seemed insurmountable. There were times when it felt like everything was falling apart, and the weight of expectations seemed unbearable.

However, amid the darkness, there was always a glimmer of hope—a belief that things could get better, that I could rise above my challenges. I discovered that even the smallest moments of happiness and self-care could make a significant difference. It wasn't about finding quick fixes but rather about embracing the journey, accepting the ups and downs, and learning from every experience.

One of the toughest lessons I learned was that life can be lonely, especially when pursuing multiple passions and juggling various responsibilities. It's easy to feel isolated or doubt whether you can achieve everything you set out to do. Yet, through it all, I realised that the most important relationship we have is with ourselves.

I adopted the mindset of "fail first attempt in learning" and embraced the idea that setbacks are stepping stones to growth. I kept pushing myself, striving to be the best version of myself despite the challenges. And slowly but surely, I began to see progress—not just in my external achievements but in my inner strength and resilience.

Through this journey, I've come to understand the power of self-acceptance and self-care. It's about recognising that we are enough, that our worth isn't defined by external accolades or the approval of others. Each of us is unique, irreplaceable, and worthy of love and respect.

So, to anyone facing their own mental health journey, I want to say this: You are not alone. It's okay to struggle, to doubt, to feel lost at times. But remember, you are stronger than you know. Find what brings you joy, what makes you feel alive, and hold onto that. And above all, know that you matter, you are enough, and I am proud of you.

In the depths of despair, I found solace in the simple joys of life—the warmth of a cup of tea on a rainy day, the laughter of a loved one, the beauty of a sunset. These moments became my anchors, reminding me that amidst the chaos, there is still beauty and goodness in the world.

I also learned the importance of seeking support when needed. Whether it was reaching out to a trusted friend, seeking therapy, or engaging in activities that nourished my soul, I discovered that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

As a psychologist, I often encourage my clients to practice self-compassion and forgiveness, yet I realised I needed to heed my own advice. I learned to be kinder to myself, to celebrate my achievements no matter how small, and to embrace my flaws as part of what makes me human.

My journey continues, filled with challenges and triumphs, but through it all, I carry with me the lessons learned along the way. I am grateful for every experience, for they have shaped me into the resilient, empathetic, and compassionate person I am today.

So, to anyone walking a similar path, remember that healing is not linear, and it's okay to stumble along the way. What matters is that you keep moving forward, one step at a time, with courage, resilience, and a belief in your own worthiness. You are on a journey of self-discovery, and every twist and turn is an opportunity for growth and transformation. Keep shining your light, for the world is brighter with you in it.

“I put my armor on, show you how strong I am I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am I'm unstoppable I'm a Porsche with no brakes I'm invincible Yeah, I win every single game I'm so powerful I don't need batteries to play I'm so confident Yeah, I'm unstoppable today” “Unstoppable” — Sia
