Navigating New Territory: Understanding Mental Health as Outstation Students

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. When it comes to a student's mental health, there are numerous aspects that may play a pivotal part in determining a student's mental well-being. These factors may include consistency in routine, eating habits, social circle, and living situations. Students' mental health concerns can have a wide-ranging impact on their lives, including their relationships with friends and family, academic achievement, physical health, and satisfaction with their college experience. These factors may also influence students' long-term work prospects and overall health. Especially as someone who is trying to adjust to a new environment, outstation students can be a little more vulnerable to developing these concerns. In addition to adjustment concerns, one might also experience loneliness, homesickness and the stress that comes with living independently.

The transition from school to college comes with many challenges to the young mind. The work pressure coupled with shifting to a new environment which is away from your friends and family can lead to distress. Not to mention, that this transition period is different for everyone as it depends on various factors like personality traits, the socio-economic background of the student, the family structure and the living conditions in their current city. In addition to that, after battling cut-throat competition to secure admission to universities, several outstation students, in their first week in college, are tackling new challenges - food, accommodation and language barriers. For example for some, this period of change might be accompanied by an intense feeling of homesickness. If homesickness coupled with stress persists over a prolonged period, it may result in more severe mental health concerns and/or disruption of routine. Outstation students who have lived away from home for many years may not experience adjustment issues, but they may struggle with managing finances, deadlines, laundry, and other daily responsibilities.


Decoding the meaning and importance of mental health for students!


Before diving further, let's take a moment to pause and first understand the importance of awareness about mental health. One of the most crucial aspects of achieving holistic well-being is ensuring mental health and well-being. Without mental well-being, students may lose focus on their health, academics and social life, which in turn may lead to compromised physical health, social isolation and stress.Thus, it is important to be aware of the implications of mental health and recognise signs of distress in a timely manner.


Moreover, mental health is strongly linked with the physical health of a student. Mental health and physical health share a two-way relationship, and affect each other. For example, prolonged stress can increase the risk of physical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Likewise, physical illnesses like hypertension and cancer can increase the risk of developing mental health concerns like anxiety, stress and depression. Students may be more vulnerable to developing mental health concerns because they are still physically and emotionally developing. For this reason, even seemingly insignificant events can have a significant impact on a student's mental health.


Baby steps to a mindful lifestyle!


As an outstation student, giving importance to your well-being and trying to share concerns with trusted individuals might help. Simply feeling heard can increase the sense of perceived support and decrease isolation. Sharing difficulties can also help us in gaining new perspectives.


Having said that, the stigma around mental health often encourages people to suppress their emotions. Society often reinforces messages like “Don’t cry,” or “There’s no need to feel sad”. While such advice may come from a good place, the message that many of us receive is that we should avoid expressing our emotions. However, actually, sharing emotions with people who make us feel emotionally safe can be very relieving and cathartic! These people may include, but are not limited to, our friends, parents, and educators. Students can share their concerns with a person who can support them. For example, if a student shares a healthy relationship with their teacher, then they may approach the teacher.

In conclusion, mental well-being is immensely important for the effective functioning of an individual. Neglecting one's mental health can lead to more debilitating mental health concerns in the future. For students, it plays a vital role in stimulating creativity, increasing learning outcomes, and developing positive relationships. Hence, we should try to proactively seek support from friends, family or professionals to enhance our well-being!
